Demolition of illegal properties of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi will be done soon

The illegal bungalows of the Punjab National Bank fraud accused Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi have been ordered to be demolished by the Maharashtra Government on August 21, 2018. The Maharashtra Government has passed this order after the Bombay High Court reacted agitatedly over the government's disregard towards the illegal property of the two accused. The Bombay HC has been adjudicating a petition filed by an NGO on inactivity of the government in dealing with the illegal properties of celebrities and businessmen in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) areas of Alibaug. The Environment Minister of the State has stated that around 121 ‘illegal’ properties have been located in Alibaug area that includes property of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, and some other celebrities. He stated that the properties identified are not in accordance with the CRZ laws and lack proper sanctions for the layout plan. The Minister, while clarifying the case of the other illegal properties, stated that they have been granted a stay order either by the District Court or the Bombay HC. Therefore, the case of these illegal properties has been transferred to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the document verification of these properties will be regulated by the Police in a month’s time. The cases forwarded to the NGT are most probably to be cleared within two to three months.
